SEJAHTERA : THE CONTEXT OF BALANCING

 SEJAHTERA

This week we learned about the concept of SEJAHTERA and Madam has assigned us to watch a video presented by Prof Dzulkifli Abdul Razak. He is is the 14th President of the International Association of Universities (IAU), a UNESCO-based organisation in Paris. He was the 5th Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). helming the post from 2000-2011, during which he introduced the Sejahtera campus concept in the move to mainstream Sustainable Development in USM.
Currently he is an Honorary Professor at the University of Nottingham, and a Senior Fellow at Faculty of Leadership and Management, at Universiti Islam Sains Malaysia (USIM).

Sejahtera is an indigenous concept that generally expresses “balance” as a holistic way of life, extending from the microcosm to the macrocosm. Tan Sri Dzukifli Abdul Razak summarised Sejahtera with the following dimensions: spiritual, physical, intellectual, cognitive, cultural, emotional, ethical and societal; and shared his vision on Sejahtera. This is some of the definition and information given in the caption of the video.

I agreed with Prof Dzulkifli where he said that SEJAHTERA is a word that commonly used in our daily life. I remeber when i was in primary school and high school, The Headmaster always starts his speech with some greets including ''Salam Sejahtera" but at that time i did not know what does the word mean in particularly. In this video Prof had explained the concept of SEJAHTERA. Based on my understanding, SEJAHTERA means prosperity in the literal meaning but conceptually SEJATERA refers to a well-balanced life in many aspects. Not just balancing just two things but more than that. Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak also had mentioned in his speech that he had summarized the things that need to balance into a simple acronym which is a SPICES. The five letters comprise Spirituality, Physically, Intelectual, Cultures, Ecology including Ethics and Economy and Society. These elements need to be balanced in order to apply the SEJAHTERA concept dominantly in our life.

Prof also mentioned a programme in 2002 which is called as Kampus Sejahtera ; which its aim is empowering student to learn to live holistically in a balanced way with nature. With the introduction of this program, students started to look back and think either their daily actions sustainable or not. Initially, they started to ban polystyrene and willing to pay 20 cents more for ecological pack which indicates the rose of awareness in them. Then, this brilliant idea also was followed by state government of Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Johor. In addition, they also were awarded by Japan for the creative development of healthy cities. It was a magnificent achievement and who knows it was lead by USM, our local university. This project then spread all the way to Barcelona and they were recognized as student environmental activism.

Before they could express the term sejahtera, seeing South Korea took the concept is such a loss as we are the one who initially owns the word and now it is already effectively applied there and they also spread it to the whole Asia Pacific Region while we Malaysians are still not sure about the term itself, not to mention yet about being at that stage. But still, Prof Dzulkifli was invited for the lauching ceremony in that park in order to promote this concept.
