CONCEPT OF SD IN ISLAM
"The concept of sustainable development in Islam can be defined as the balanced and simultaneous realization of consumer welfare, economic efficiency, attainment of social justice, and ecological balance in the framework of a evolutionary knowledge-based, socially interactive model defining the shuratic process”
In our second class, we learned about Islam and Sustainable Development. In this lecture, there are three main topics discussed. They are:
→Spirituality as Missing Component in SDG
→Maqasid al-Shariah and SDG
→Islam and Sustainability
First thing first, Madam showed us South Korea's suicide rate. I am very shocked to hear this as what I know, particularly in entertainment, South Korea is a well-developed country and was recognized as one of the country with highest income in the world. Surprisingly, the key reasons for their suicide is depression.
Seeing the rise in suicide cases nowadays, I believe it is one of the reasons why Islam and sustainability are linked to this issue. In my opinion, by being a Muslim it will be barrier for us from commit such thing which is suicide. Three sustainability issues are involved, such as economic, social and environmental sustainability. For economic survival, according to the rules set by Islam, Muslims should conduct economic activities. We are responsible for the social aspect and the environmental part of living in harmony with other creatures that are human beings or even our climate.
Madam also remind us to reduce water pollution saving water during wudhu'. Madam also showed us a video that address how can we save water in wudhu' by moderating the uses of water in our Wudhu'. A very interesting video 😊.
Sustainable development is not a new idea in Islam; the concepts of sustainable development have existed in the Holy Qur'an and the Hadith for centuries. Nevertheless the idea of sustainable development for government and civil society in the Islamic world may have recently been adopted. The Islamic viewpoint supports the existence of everything on earth for humanity and the award of God to individuals.
Furthermore, we also learned about how Maqasid Shariah in Islam relates to the SDGs and how importance it is. There are three types of Maqasid al-Shariah, including Dhururiyyat (Essentials) which contains the protection and preservation of five fundamental values Religion (Al-din),Life (Al-nafs) ,Intellect (Al-‘Aql) ,Wealth (Al-Mal) and Lineage (Al-Nasb).Then, Tahsiniyyat (Complementary) for example, shortening of Solat for traveler. Lastly, Hajiyyat (Embellishment) such as cleanliness, adab, charitable and more. These elements are important in order to ensure the survival of human beings, to provide comfort and to bring perfection into human life. If we live our lives in the midst of these Maqasids, we surely live our lives as a Muslim as a whole, ensuring happiness hereafter. As a Muslim we should be grateful as by executing Islam fully in our life will resulted to a complete life because Islam is a complete religion which has The Shariah which is a way of life.
We also were exposed to the 5Ps Dimensions of Sustainable Development Goals which stimulate action over the fifteen year period (2015-2030) in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet. The 5ps comprise of People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership.
Lastly, in order to ensure that we had understood the topic completely, Madam had assigned us to make an awareness poster which contains Maqasid Shariah and SDGs and post it on social media (Facebook). My topic was Peace, Justice and Strong Institution and Al-Dhururiyyat,
